A Sabbath Day's Journey

By: Rev. Paul Landgraf
What is a Sabbath day's journey? First of all, it is a Jewish expression. We measure distances in meters or yards. The Jews had a certain distance that they could walk on Saturday before it would be considered work. So their synagogues that they went to on Saturday could not be very far away. The word appears only in Acts 1:12 and indicates a distance of about three-quarters of a mile.

With that in mind, I think it is important to remember the origins of Christianity. Just because we have an Old Testament, it does not mean that we call it the 'Outdated Testament'. Much of the Old Testament has a literary structure that we are not aware of because of our modern emphasis on chapter and verse divisions. Within many of these blogs, I try to get the reader to see a bigger picture, a larger perspective that often includes the Old Testament and the environment that was present when the New Testament was seeing the Light of the day.

Second, a Sabbath day's journey is intentionally short. These 'journeys' with a text, almost always one of the three readings for that Sunday, are deliberately brief discussions. This blog was never designed to be a comprehensive look at any text. Sometimes a specific word is studied in detail. But, as a whole, a blog entry, by itself, is meant to be quite brief.

Finally, since the term 'Sabbath day's journey' appears in Acts, it is meant to appeal to a wide variety of people. This blog is meant for those who cannot come on Sunday mornings. And it is also for those who do come on Sunday mornings but would also like a further study of the text. It is also for those who live somewhere else in the world (besides Drake and Freedom, Missouri, USA) and would simply like a further study of the text. It was meant to get these different groups of people to start thinking about the biblical texts. Part of the reason for this blog is that I am not able to have a bible class on Sunday mornings with either congregation, and so, to have a blog like this seemed like a good idea. I hope it is helpful for you, in whatever situation you may be.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. And thank you for taking the time to read this!

The season of Easter continues on. And it should be said at the start that this Sunday is not known by the title of the “First Sunday after Easter”, but it is the “Second Sunday of Easter”. The reality of Jesus coming back to life continues to make a difference. Jesus’ resurrection makes a significant difference because it comes as a result of his sacrificial death for all sins on Good Friday. It was a GOOD Friday, but this makes the entire season of Easter a VERY good one.

The Gospel Reading for this Sunday is the same one whatever year it is within the three-year series. It is also the same with the one-year series. The Gospel Reading is John 20:19-31. And it is good to have the perspective of another account.

Currently, within the weekly writings of this website, we are going through the Gospel according to Luke, much like this year in the three-year series. And we are taking a section at a time, in the order in which the writer laid out the text. Currently we are in what is typically called the ninth chapter.

You could say that this is a significant “highpoint”. In the first part of the text below, Jesus is on what is usually called the Mount of Transfiguration. And at this “highpoint” there is significant reference to what could be called “the End”. There will be a mention of an “exodus”. That, hopefully, is a familiar word. After one gets to the middle, thinking about the end is a lot more easily done.

If this is the first time you are reading the writings of this website, it should be said that what follows is an EXTREMELY literal translation of the text of the New Testament. And any type of translation could be written in any number of ways. In this translation, the order of the words in English is the order that the words are in Greek. It would be a generality to say that the important words in Greek are the earlier ones in the sentence.  It should also be said that the English words chosen are designed to help make a connection to the original language of the text. Both of these factors may end up making the translation below a bit confusing, and, therefore, it probably will be helpful to look at another translation or a study bible. It should also be said that the hyphens below are designed to give the reader an idea of how many words in English are from the one word in the Greek. Ultimately, what follows is hopefully helpful, and what follows is Luke 9:28-50:

Now  it-happened  after  the  words,  these,  about  days,  eight,  and  having-taken-along  Peter  and  John  and  Jacob,  he-went-up  into  the  mountain  to-pray-toward.  And  it-happened  in  the  to-pray-toward  him,  the  appearance  of-the  face,  his,  hetero,  and  the  clothing,  his,  white,  sending-out-flashes.  And  behold,  men,  duo,  they-were-speaking-with  him,  who  they-were  Moses  and  Elias,  who  having-appeared  in  glory,  they-were-speaking-of  the  exodus,  his,  which  he-was-about  to-fulfill  in  Jerusalem.

Now  the  Peter  and  the-ones  with  him,  they-were  having-been-burdened  with-sleep;  now  having-been-thoroughly-awakened,  they-saw  the  glory,  his,  and   the  duo  men,  the-ones  standing-with  him.  And  it-happened  in  the  complete-removal,  they,  from  him,  he-said,  the  Peter,  toward  the  Jesus,  “Overseer,  good  it-is  for-us,  here,  to-be,  and  let-us-make  tents,  three;  one  for-you,  and  one  for-Moses,  and  one  for-Elias,”  not  knowing  what  he-says.

Now  these-things  he,  saying,  it-happened,  a-cloud,  and  it-was-overshadowing  them.  Now  they-feared  in  the  to-come-into,  they,  into  the  cloud.  And  a-voice  happened  out-of  the  cloud,  saying,  “This  is  the  Son,  my,  the-one  having-been-chosen;  him,  hear.”  And  in  the  to-happen,  the  voice,  he-was-found,  Jesus,  alone.  And  they,  they-were-silent,  and  to-no-one,  they-reported  in  those,  the  days,  nothing  of-what  they-have-seen.

Now  it-happened  in-the  afterward  day,  having-come-down,  they,  from  the  mountains,  it-met-with  him,  a-crowd,  great.  And  behold,  a-man  from  the  crowd,  he-shouted,  saying,  “Teacher,  I-beg  of-you  to-look-upon,  upon  the  son,  my,  because  only-begotten  to-me  he-is;  and  behold,  a-spirit  takes  him,  and  suddenly  he-cries-out,  and  it-tears  him  with  foam,  and  hardly  it-goes-away  from  him,  shattering  him;  and  I-begged  the  disciples,  your,  that  they-would-throw-out  it,  and  not  they-were-able.”
Now  having-answered,  the  Jesus,  he-said,  “O  generation,  unbelieving  and  having-been-twisted,  until  when  I-will-be  toward  you  and  I-will-endure  you?  Lead-toward  here,  the  son  of-you.”

Now  yet  coming-toward,  he,  it-tore  him,  the  demon,  and  it-threw-violently.  Now  he-rebuked,  the  Jesus,  the  spirit,  the  unclean,  and  he-cured  the  boy,  and  he-gave-back  him  to-the  father,  his.  Now  they-were-pounded-out,  all,  upon  the  majesty  of-the  God.

Now  all,  marveling  upon  all-things  which  he-was-doing,  he-said  toward  the  disciples,  his:  “Place,  you,  into  the  ears  of-you,  the  words,  these:  For  the  Son  of-the  Man  is-about  to-be-given-over  into  hands  of-men.”  Now  the-ones  were-ignorant-of  the  word,  this,  and  it-was  having-been-covered  from  them,  in-order-that  not  they-might-perceive  it,  and  they-were-afraid  to-question  him  about  the  saying,  this.

Now  it-came-into,  a-dialogue  in  them,  the  who  might  be  greater  of-them.  Now  the  Jesus,  knowing  the  dialogue  of-the  heart  of-them,  having-taken-up  a-child,  he-stood  him  beside  himself.  And  he-said  to-them,  “Who  ever  receives  this,  the  child,  upon  the  name,  my;  me  he-receives;  and  who  ever  me,  he-receives,  he-receives  the-one  having-sent-out  me;  for  the-one  lesser  in  all  you  being,  this-one  is  great.”

Now  having-answered,  John  said,  “Overseer,  we-saw  someone  in  the  name  of-you,  throwing-out  demons,  and  we-were-preventing  him,  because  not  he-follows  with  us.”

Now  he-said  toward  him,  the  Jesus,  “Not  do-prevent;  for  the-one  not  he-is  against  you,  for-the-sake-of  you  he-is.”

You might want to make a note that there will be another dispute among the disciples as to which one is greater, and this happened VERY near the end, right after Jesus institutes the Lord’s Supper, in Luke 22:24. And the word there is significantly stronger than what could be called “dialogue” above. The word used later is a “love-of-strife”. The problems can seem to get bigger. And Jesus still has the solution.

This Sunday is very special. This Sunday we celebrate “The Resurrection of Our Lord”, and it is much more commonly known as Easter. And Jesus’ resurrection after his death is so important that it is also a long season, much like Lent. But where Lent is only forty days long, Easter beats Lent by being ten days longer.

This being the year that the Gospel Readings in the three-year series particularly focus on the Gospel according to Luke, the Gospel Reading for this “Easter Day” is Luke 24:1-12. In the weekly writings of this website, we are currently going through that same Gospel account, a little bit at a time, enough to get us through the entire account this year, in about fifty weeks, but we are going through that account in the order that was laid out by the writer. And obviously we are not anywhere near the last chapter of that Gospel account.

This week’s writing will begin what is commonly known as chapter nine of that account. And it should be made clear that this is an extremely literal translation of this account. It may be difficult to understand what is going on because of the words chosen and their unusual order. To say it in a very general way, it could be said that the verbs are usually quite early within the sentence. And in English that does not always happen (case in point).

Now the importance of verbs fits with history, since it really is HIS STORY. Jesus did not just sit around on a throne. He lived. He died. And now he lives again. And he does all those verbs for a very special reason—to save, to rescue, to do what his name means. Verbs are incredibly important. And here is the first part of chapter nine in the Gospel according to Luke (9:1-27):

(If this is your first encounter with the writings of this website, please note that the hyphens below are designed to give the reader an idea of how many words in English are from the one word in the Greek, the language of the New Testament. And the translation is designed to help the reader to see the close connections to the Greek language; and this is especially true since we have a doctor for a writer this year. A doctor tends to have a great vocabulary. And a strong recommendation is to look at this text also in another translation; a study bible may also be helpful.)

Now  having-called-together  the  twelve,  he-gave  to-them  power  and  authority  upon  all  the  demons  and  diseases,  to-be-therapeutic;  and  he  sent-out  them  to-proclaim  the  kingdom  of-the  God  and  to-cure  the-ones  without-strength,  and  he-said  toward  them,  “Nothing  take  into  the  way,  neither  staff,  nor  pouch,  nor  bread,  nor  silver,  nor  each  duo  tunics  to-have.  And  into  what  ever  house  you-come-into,  there  remain,  and  from-there,  you-come-out.  And  as-many  as  not  they-receive  you,  coming-out  from  the  city,  that,  the  dust  from  the  feet  of-you,  shake-off,  into  a-witness  upon  them.”  Now  coming-out,  they-were-going-through,  according-to  the  villages,  evangelizing  and  being-therapeutic  all-places.

Now  he-heard  Herod,  the  tetrarch,  the  things-happening,  all,  and  he-was-thoroughly-perplexed  on-account-of  the  to-be-said  by  some  that  John,  he-was-raised  from  dead-ones,  now  by  some  that  Elias  appeared,  now  others,  that  a-prophet,  a-certain-one  of-the  archaic-ones,  he-rose-up.

Now  he-said,  Herod,  “John  I,  I-beheaded;  now  who  is  this,  about  whom  I-hear  such-things?”  And  he-was-seeking  to-see  him.

And  having-returned,  the  apostles,  they-narrated  to-him  as-much-as  they-did.  And  having-taken-aside  them,  he-departed,  according-to  their-own,  into  a-city  being-called  Bethsaida.  Now  the  crowds,  having-come-to-know,  they-followed  him;  and  having-welcomed  them,  he-was-talking  to-them  about  the  kingdom  of-the  God,  and  the-ones  a-need  having  of-therapy,  he-was-curing.

Now  the  day  began  to-decline;  now  having-come-toward,  the  twelve,  they-said  to-him,  “Set-free  the  crowd,  so-that  having-gone  into  the  circular  villages  and  farms,  they-may-lodge,  and  they-may-find  provisions,  because  here  in  a-desert  place  we-are.”

Now  he-said  toward  them,  “Give  to-them,  you,  to-eat.”

Now  the-ones  said,  “Not  they-are  for-us  more  than  breads,  five,  and  fishes,  two,  if  not  having-gone,  we,  we-may-agora  into  all  the  people,  this,  foods.”  For  there-were  about  men,  five-thousand.
Now  he-said  toward  the  disciples,  his,  “Make-to-recline  them,  cliques  about  each  fifty.”  And  they-did  thus,  and  they-made-to-recline  all.

Now  having-taken  the  five  breads  and  the  two  fish,  having-looked-up  into  the  heaven,  he-eulogized  them  and  he-made-a-cataclysm,  and  he-was-giving  to-the  disciples  to-set-before  the  crowd;  and  they-ate,  and  they-were-satisfied,  all,  and  it-was-picked-up,  the  excesses  to-them  of-fragments,  wicker-baskets,  twelve.

And  it-happened  in  the  to-be  he,  praying  according-to  one,  they-were-with  him,  the  disciples,  and  he-questioned  them  saying,  “Whom  me,  they-say,  the  crowds,  to-be?”

Now  the-ones  having-answered,  they-said,  “John  the  Baptist,  now  others,  Elias,  now  others,  that  a-prophet,  a-certain-one  of-the  archaic-ones,  he-rose-up.”

Now  he-said  to-them,  “Now  you,  whom,  me,  you-say  to-be?”

Now  Peter,  having-answered,  he-said,  “The  Christ  of-the  God.”

Now  the-one  having-rebuked  them,  he-commanded  to-no-one  to-tell  this,  having-said,  ‘It-is-necessary,  the  Son  of-the  Man,  many-things  to-suffer,  and  to-be-rejected  by  the  presbyters  and  archpriests  and  grammatists,  and  to-be-killed  and  on-the  third  day,  to-be-raised.”

Now  he-was-saying  toward  all,  “If  anyone  wants  after  me  to-come,  let-him-deny  himself  and  let-him-take-up  the  cross,  his,  according-to  a-day,  and  let-him-follow  me.  For  who  ever  wants  the  life,  his,  to-save,  he-will-lose  it;  now  who  ever  loses  the  life,  his,  for-the-sake  of-me,  this-one,  he-will-save  it.  For  what  is-profited  a-man,  having-gained  the  world,  whole,  now  himself   having-lost  or  having-suffered-loss?  For  who  ever  is-ashamed-of  me  and  the  my  words,  this-one,  the  Son  of-the  Man  will-be-ashamed-of,  when  he-comes  in  the  glory,  his,  and  of-the  Father  and  of-the  holy  angels.  Now  I-am-saying  to-you  truly,  they-are,  some  of-the-ones  here,  standing,  who  no  NO  they-may-taste  of-death  until  when  they-see  the  kingdom  of-the  God.”

This Sunday continues our walk within the Lenten season. And this particular Sunday has a special title, or you could say that it has two special titles. This Sunday is Palm Sunday. It is also known as the Sunday of the Passion.

It is a good thing that these two themes are brought together, especially since Jesus, for most of his lifetime, did not often have recorded his going to Jerusalem. And when he gets to Jerusalem this final time, he does not pick myriads of angels to ride upon. He instead picks a slow, small, and borrowed donkey. And his enemies think that they can bring him down. But he goes down willingly. And you might say that he goes UP willingly. And you also might say that he is very passionate about this.

In the writings of this website, we are going through the Gospel according to Luke in the way that was laid out by the writer. And currently we are in the midst of going through what is typically called chapter eight of the account, much earlier than Palm Sunday. What follows is an extremely literal translation of essentially the latter half of chapter eight.

It should also be noted that the words in capital letters below are to note an historical present, where a past tense verb is expected, but a present tense verb is given. The first time this happened was with Simon, the Pharisee, at Luke 7:40. The people connected to these special verbs are not very special.  But we will be seeing a significant (and therefore special) amount of variety of those who are connected to these special verbs, in much the same way that the Gospel goes out to a variety of people in the book of the Acts of the Apostles. By the way it could be said at this point that there are historical presents within this work as well. And a connection could also be made to the living creature connected to the Gospel according to Luke, that of an ox, a tame animal that can deal with a large variety of other living things.

If this is your first encounter with the writings of this website, please note that the hyphens below are designed to give the reader an idea of how many words in English are from the one word in the Greek, the language of the New Testament. And although some of the translations of the words below are quite awkward, they are designed to show how similar the Greek language is to the English. And in general, the verbs are usually at the beginning of sentences, so when other words appear before the verb, they are given a greater emphasis. A strong recommendation is to look at this text also it at least another translation or perhaps a study bible. There are many different ways to translate the same text. And what follows is Luke 8:26-56:

And  they-sailed-down  into  the  country  of-the  Gerasenes,  which  it-is  opposite  the  Galilee.  Now  having-come-out,  him,  upon  the  land,  he-met-up-with  a-man,  a-certain,  out-of  the  city,  having  demons,  and  for-time,  sufficient,  not  he-put-on  a-garment,  and  in  house,  not  he-was-remaining,  but-on-the-contrary,  in  the  tombs.

Now  having-seen  the  Jesus,  having-cried-out,  he-fell-toward  him,  and  with-a-voice,  great,  he-said,  “What  with-me  and  with-you,  Jesus,  Son  of-the  God  of-the  Highest?  I-beg  you,  not  me  torment.”  For  he-commanded  the  spirit,  the  unclean,  to-come-out  from  the  man,  for  with-many  times  it-had-seized-with  him,  and  he-was-being-bound  with-chains  and  with-fetters  being-guarded,  and  ripping-apart  the  bonds,  he-was-driven  by  the  demon  into  the  deserts.  Now  he-questioned  him,  the  Jesus,  “What  your  name  is?”

Now  the-one  said,  “Legion,”  because  it-entered,  demons,  many,  into  him.  And  they-were-exhorting  him  that,  not  he-would-command  them  into  the  abyss  to-come-away.  Now  it-was  there,  a-herd  of-pigs,  sufficient,  grazing  in  the  hill,  and  they-exhorted  him  that  he-would-allow  them  into  those,  to-come-into,  and  he-allowed  them.

Now  having-come-out,  the  demons,  from  the  man,  they-came-into,  into  the  pigs,  and  it-rushed,  the  herd,  down  the  steep-bank,  into  the  lake,  and  it-choked.

Now  having-seen  the-ones  grazing,  the-thing  having-happened,  they-fled,  and  they-reported-back  into  the  city  and  into  the  fields.  Now  they-came-out  to-see  the-thing  having-happened,  and  they-came  toward  the  Jesus,  and  they-found,  sitting,  the  man  from  whom  the  demons  came-out,  having-been-clothed  and  being-in-his-senses  by  the  feet  of-the  Jesus,  and  they-were-phobic.  Now  they-reported  to-them,  the-ones  having-seen  how  he-was-saved,  the  demonized-one.

And  it-asked  him,  all  the  multitude  of-the  surrounding-region  of-the  Gerasenes,  to-come-away  from  them,  because  with-phobia,  a-great,  they-were-seized;  now  he,  having-stepped-in  into  a-boat,  he-returned.  Now  he-was-begging  of-him,  the  man  from  whom  it-had-come-out,  the  demons,  to-be  with  him;  now  he-dismissed  him  saying,  “Return  into  the  house  of-you,  and  describe  what-things  to-you,  he-did,  the  God.”  And  he-came-away,  throughout  whole  the  city,  proclaiming  what-things  he-did  to-him,  the  Jesus.
Now  in  the  return,  the  Jesus,  it-welcomed  him,  the  crowd;  for  they-were  all  expecting  him.  And  behold,  he-came,  a-man,  to-whom  name,  Jairus,  and  this-one,  a-ruler  of-the  synagogue  he-existed;  and  having-fallen  at  the  feet  of-the  Jesus,  he-was-exhorting  him  to-come-into,  into  the  house  of-him,  because  daughter,  only-begotten  was  to-him,  as  of-years,  twelve,  and  she,  she-was-dying.

Now  in  the  going-off,  his,  the  crowds,  they-were-pressing-upon  him.  And  a-woman,  being  in  a-flow  of-blood  from  years,  twelve,  who  on-physicians,  having-spent-up  whole,  the  livelihood,  not  she-had-power  from  no-one  to-be-therapeutic;  coming-toward  from-behind,  she-touched  the  fringe  of-the  garment  of-him,  and  at-once  it-stood,  the  flow  of-the  blood  of-her.  And  he-said,  the  Jesus,  “Who  the-one  having-touched  me?”

Now  denying,  all,  he-said,  the  Peter,  “Overseer,  the  crowds  press-upon  you,  and  they-jostle.”

Now  the  Jesus,  he-said,  “He-touched  me,  someone;  for  I,  I-knew  power,  having-gone-out  from  me.”

Now  having-seen,  the  woman,  that  not  she-was-hidden,  trembling  she-came,  and  having-fallen-toward  him,  for  what  cause  she-touched  him,  she-announced  before  all  the  people,  and  how  she-was-cured  at-once.

Now  the  one  said  to-her,  “Daughter,  the  faith  of-you,  it-has-saved  you;  go  into  peace.”

Still  he  speaking,  HE-COMES  a-certain-one  from  the  arch-synagogue,  saying,  “She-has-died,  the  daughter  of-you;  no-more  trouble  the  teacher.”

Now  the  Jesus,  having-heard,  he-answered  him,  “Not  do-phobia;  only  believe,  and  she-will-be-saved.”  Now  having-come  into  the  house,  not  he-allowed  to-come-into  anyone  with  him,  if  not  Peter  and  John  and  Jacob,  and  the  father  of-the  child,  and  the  mother.

Now  they-were-weeping,  all,  and  they-were-bewailing  her.  Now  the-one  said,  “Not  do-weep;  for  not  she-did-die,  but-on-the-contrary  she-is-sleeping.”  And  they-were-ridiculing  hem,  knowing  that  she-died.

Now  he,  having-held  the  hand  of-her,  he-called,  saying,  “The  child,  rise.”  And  it-returned,  the  spirit  of-her,  and  she-rose-up  at-once,  and  he-instructed  her  to-be-given  to-eat.  And  they-stood-out,  the  parents  of-her;  now  the-one  commanded  them,  no-one  to tell,  the-thing  having-happened.

This Sunday, known as The Fifth Sunday in Lent, has for its Gospel Reading Luke 20:9-20. With this text, the progression of Jesus toward the cross becomes much more obvious. The Palm Sunday text has already happened in the previous chapter. And by the very end of the reading, Jesus is very close to being arrested.

Last week’s text had the Pharisees and the Scribes not liking what Jesus had to say. This time the two groups are the Scribes and the Chief Priests, and the addition of the Chief Priests has added some power to the situation. And the very last word of the reading is that of the governor, and that verb, to govern, contains a significant amount of power. And this is clearly seen in the way that it is laid out within the text.

In the writings of this website, we are also going through the Gospel according to Luke, but in the way that was laid out by the writer. Currently we are starting what is known as chapter eight of this account. The tension here is not so obvious. And the power of Jesus is not always obvious. It is the popularity of Jesus that is obvious at this point.
What follows is an extremely literal translation of essentially the first half of chapter eight. You might say that what is increasing is the connection of Jesus is to different people in different ways. And this fits with this Gospel account’s connection to the living creature of the ox, the tame ox, the animal that is okay in working with others. And despite the extreme variety of situations and people, Jesus continues onward toward the cross.

If this is your first encounter with the writings of this website, please note that the hyphens below are designed to give the reader an idea of how many words in English are from the one word in the Greek, the language of the New Testament. And some of the translations of the words are designed to show how similar the Greek language is to the English. The recommendation is to look at this text also in another translation or a study bible. One should keep in mind that there often different ways that the same words can be translated. Now what follows is Luke 8:1-25:

And  it-happened  in  the  according-to-order,  and  he,  he-was-passing-through
according-to  city  and  village,  proclaiming  and  evangelizing  the  kingdom  of-the  God;  and  the  twelve  with him,  and  women,  certain,  who  were  having-been-therapeutic  from  spirits,  evil,  and  weaknesses,  Maria,  the  being-called  Magdalene,  from  whom  demons,  seven,  they-had-come-out,  and  Joanna,  wife  of-Chuzza,  steward  of-Herod,  and  Susanna,  and  others,  many,  who  were-ministering  to-them,  from  the  possessions  of-them.

Now  being-with  a-crowd,  much,   and  of-the  according-to  city,  journeying-upon  toward  him,  he-said  through  a-parable:  “He-came-out,  the-one  sowing  of-the  to-sow  the  seed,  his.  And  in  the  to-sow,  him,  the-one,  on-the-one-hand,  it-fell  along  the  way,  and  it-was-trampled-down,  and  the  birds  of-the  heaven,  it-devoured  it.  And  other,  it-fell-down  upon  the  rock,  and  having-grown,  it-was-withered,  because-of  the  not  to-have  moisture.  And  other,  it-fell  in  midst  of-the  thorns,  and  having-grown-up-with,  the  thorns  choked-off  it.  And  other,  it-fell  into  the  ground,  the  good,  and  having-grown,  it-made  fruit,  a-hundred-fold.”  These-things  saying,  he-was-calling,  “The-one  having  ears  to-hear,  let-him-hear.”

Now  they-were-questioning  him,  the  disciples,  his,  what  this  might-be,  the  parable.  Now  the-one  said,  “To-you  it-has-been-given  to-know  the  mysteries  of-the  kingdom  of-the  God,  now  to-the  rest  in  parables,  that  seeing,  not  they-may-see,  and  hearing,  not  they-may-understand.  Now  is  this,  the  parable:  The  seed  is  the  word  of-the  God.  Now  the-ones  along  the  way,  they-are  the-ones  having-heard,  then  he-comes,  the  diabolical-one  and  he-takes  the  word  from  the  heart  of-them,  that  not  having-believed,  they-may-be-saved.  Now  the-ones  upon  the  rock,  the-ones  when  they-hear  with  joy,  they-receive  the  word;  and  these,  root,  not  they-have,  the-ones  toward  a-time  they-believe,  and  in  time  of-proving,  they-fall-away.  Now  the-one,  into  the  thorns,  having-fallen,  these  are  the-ones  having-heard,  and  by  concerns  and  riches  and  pleasures  of-the  life  going,  they-are-choked,  and  not  they-bear-to-maturity.  Now  the-one  in  the  beautiful  soil,  these  are  those-who,  in  heart,  a-beautiful  and  good,  having-heard  the  word,  they-hold-fast  and  they-bear-fruit  in  patience.”

“Now  no-one  a-lamp  having-lit,  he-covers  it  with-a-vessel  or  underneath  a-couch  he-puts,  but-on-the-contrary,  upon  a-lampstand  he-puts,  in-order-that  the-ones  coming-into,  they-may-see  the  light.  For  not  is  hidden  which  not  manifest,  it-will-become,  nor  secret  which  certainly  not  it-will-be-known,  and  into  manifest  it-will-become,  now-not  hidden-away  which  not  certainly  it-will-be-known,  and  into  manifest  it-will-come.  Therefore  see  how  you-hear;  for  who  ever  has,  it-will-be-given  to-him,  and  who  ever  not  he-has,  even  what  he-thinks  to-have,  it-will-be-taken  from  him.”

Now  she-happened-along  toward  him,  the  mother,  and  the  brothers  of-him,  and  not  they-were-able  to-join-with  him  because-of  the  crowd.  Now  it-was-reported  to-him:  “The  mother  of-you  and  the  brothers  of-you,  they-are-standing  outside,  to-see,  wanting,  you.”

Now  the-one  having-answered,  he-said  toward  them,  “Mother  of-me  and  brothers  of-me,  these  are,  the-ones  the  word  of-the  God,  hearing  and  doing.”

Now  it-happened  in  one  of-the  days,  and  he,  he-stepped-in  into  a-boat  and  the  disciples  of-him,  and  he-said  toward  them,  “Let-us-go-over  into  the  other-side  of-the  lake,”  and  they-led-up.  Now  sailing,  they,  he-fell-asleep.

And  it-came-down,  a-storm  of-wind  into  the  lake,  and  they-were-being-filled-up,  and  they-were-in-danger.  Now  having-come-toward,  they-awoke  him  saying,  “Overseer,  overseer,  we-are-being-destroyed.”

Now  the-one  having-been-awakened,  he-rebuked  the  wind  and  the  roughness  of-the  water,  and  they-ceased,  and  it-happened  a-calm.  Now  he-said  to-them,  “Where  the  faith  of-you?”

Now  having-feared,  they-marveled,  saying  toward  one-another,  “Who  then  this-one  is,  that  also  the  winds  he-commands  and  the  water,  and  they-listen-to  him?”
